"The flagship wine from this celebrated Trentino estate was not produced in 2012. We do have the stunning 2013 San Leonardo on the market now. This vintage is large in scale and has immediate intensity, and I am somewhat surprised by the volume and seamless bouquet that appears this early in the game. This vintage shows balanced ripeness with plummy fruit aromas that are carefully contrasted against spice, leather and fine tobacco. The blend is Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenère and Merlot, and San Leonardo is always aged in barrique for four years (of which only 25% of the barrels are new). The wines are more akin to Bordeaux than Bolgheri with their balance and purity and (says leading Italian critic Nicolas Belfrage) ‘can have an elegance-cum-depth capable of taking on the best clarets of the world‘. San Leonardo’s owner Marchese Carlo Guerrieri Gonzaga, a rare example (at the time) of a professionally-trained aristocrat-oenologist, spent time at Tenuta San Guido back in the 1960s and subsequently employed the same legendary consultant, Giacomo Tachis, as Sassicaia for a time.
San Leonardo’s outstanding Bordeaux blend has received ‘Tre Bicchiere’ from Gambero Rosso for an extraordinary fourteen vintages consecutively and was also numbered among the Guide’s ‘Fifty Wines which changed Italy’. Latterly the critics have got on board with great write-ups from Jancis Robinson, The Wall Street Journal (to whom we introduced the estate) and the Wine Advocate giving recent vintages of San Leonardo 94-97 point scores.
On the 2013...
'Gentleman', a monthly edition by Milano Finanza recently released the line-up of Italy's greatest wines, based on the cumulative ratings of the main Italian wine guides, with the San Leonardo 2013 positioned as number 1 in Italy.
A few of the notes from the reviewers: the Gambero Rosso in awarding the Tre Bicchieri to the 2013 celebrates its "vitality, complexity, elegance, harmony", Daniele Cernilli in Doctor Wine defines it as a "great, intense and elegant wine", Slowine underlines its "fineness and elegance, of superior structure", for Bibenda it is an image of "excellence, nobility and enological elegance", Veronelli speaks of a "jewel of Italian enology, champion of finesse and elegance". Vitae Quattro Viti awarded it the Trastevin 2018 as a symbolic wine of its region.
"San Leonardo reported that 2013 was one of their most balanced years in the set of recent vintages, and from the bouquet alone, I can already say that I agree. Here I’m finding a classic expression of cool-climate Bordeaux varieties, with fresh blackberry and raspberry, complemented by peppery florals and wild herbs. Smoky minerals add even further depths. The sheer density of fruit is remarkable. Polished yet fleshy and ripe, juicy acids guide with gorgeous inner florals and mounting fine-grained tannins toward the long and youthfully structured finale. This is enjoyable to taste today, yet also well-positioned to mature beautifully for many decades in your cellar. Fans of San Leonardo shouldn’t be without the 2013." 95 pts, Eric Guido

If you’d like more than the number shown, or it’s shown as ‘Out of Stock’ / ‘Email to order’, just call us or drop us an email to confirm your order and delivery schedule, as our winemakers send us fresh stocks frequently.
Standard Delivery takes 2-3 working days and costs £7.50 for orders under £75. Orders over £75 are subject to FREE Standard Delivery. Standard and Express Delivery is available for most mainland UK postcodes as listed in our T&Cs.
Express Delivery costs £12.50. Express delivery orders over £75 are £5.
For Express Delivery (next working day) orders need to be placed before 1pm. Orders placed after 1pm will be received after two business days. Orders placed for next day delivery after 1pm on a Thursday will be delivered on Monday. Orders placed on a Bank Holiday will similarly be processed the day after the Bank Holiday and delivered the following day.
Same Day Delivery costs £20. This option is available to most London postcodes as listed in our T&Cs, if ordered by 1pm Monday to Friday (excluding public holidays). If ordered after 1pm, you will receive your order on the next working day. We may be able to organise a speedy courier for you, so please call or email us if you have special requests. What a great way to get that wine to your office or home for the evening!
Our Club Offers may take longer to ship, as we collect all of our members’ orders together before ordering them from the winemaker. The expected delivery timelines for each product should be specified on the product page. Otherwise, please contact us for the information.
