Autumn wines: it's time to get cosy
It's all starting to feel a bit autumnal isn't it? Time to put the heating on, find your dusty slippers that have been hiding under the sofa all summer, and get cosy with some warming reds.
Here are three wines that will be in our wine rack this autumn...
Jamsheed Wines Illaj Syrah, Yarra Valley
[caption id="attachment_5681" align="alignleft" width="222"] Jamsheed Wines Illaj Syrah - £16.60[/caption]
Up first a cracking Syrah from Jamsheed in the Yarra Valley. Winemaker, Gary Mills, produces elegant Yarra Valley Syrahs and aromatic whites with whole bunch fermentations and minimal use of sulphur.
The Illaj Syrah is deep purple in colour and highly perfumed with cassis, candied violets and black cherries. Smooth and rich on the palate with black fruit, a touch of sweet spice and just a hint of funk.
Luis Pato Vinhas Velhas Tinto
[caption id="attachment_5682" align="alignleft" width="153"] Luis Pato Vinhas Velhas Tinto - 26.40[/caption]
If you haven't tried the Baga grape before this is a must try from the king of Baga, Luis Pato in Bairrada, Portugal. This wine is impressively elegant with bramble and forest fruit character, capable of ageing well but drinking deliciously now.
A firm team favourite, our wine guru Tom notes 'its quality is undeniable the moment you taste it'.
If you like Nebbiolo try this.
Domaine Fayolle Fils et Fille Crozes-Hermitage Rouge les Pontaix
[caption id="attachment_5684" align="alignleft" width="222"] Domaine Fayolle Fils et Fille Crozes-Hermitage Rouge les Pontaix - 22.90[/caption]
Brother and sister team, Fayolle Fils et Fille, have a well-deserved reputation of producing a range of elegant yet powerful, long-lived reds.
The red Pontaix is marked by rich, dark gamey notes over black fruit, yet also shows the elegance and refinement which is increasingly the signature of the estate. This wine is simply delicious with a just the right amount of oomph, fantastic value for the price.
Try with roast lamb.
