Henschke Julius Riesling
- South Australia, Australia
Henschke are one of the best producers in South Eastern Australia and their Hill of Grace battles it out with the mighty Penfolds Grange for Australia’s most profound wine (although of varying styles!). Organic and Bio-dynamic their Riesling comes from vines in the Eden Valley which date back to the 1960s and is named after one of their ancestors Julius Henschke who was a highly talented artist.
"This is seriously zesty with notes of lemons, grapefruit, lime (traditional note in Eden Valley Riesling’s), crunchy green apple, peach and white currants. On the palate, there is riper lime and currant notes along with an electrifying acidity and a very long finish. I love the balance between fruit and acidity here, it really is fantastic." Angus, Wine Guru
"100% Riesling from vines planted in the 1960s by Stephen Henschke’s father and named after his musical and artistic great-uncle. 500 m above sea level, in the centre of Eden Valley, on sandy loam over gravel and bedrock with patches of clay. Biodynamic cultivation. pH 2.98, acidity 6.98 g/l. Picked from mid to end of March. Fermented in tank. '17 was an awesome vintage, out of the box, like 2002.' Richly floral lemon and frangipani aroma. Has real power – is this from those 60-year-old vines? Minerally, steely core, fierce and fine. Crystalline citrus. White currants. Beautiful fruit that seems to have been compressed into sheets of glass. A bite of green spice on the finish. Long and sure. (TC)" 17 pts, Jancis Robinson
"A very citrusy riesling with lime and green apples, as well as more floral elements in the form of cherry blossoms and chalk undertones. Linear and taut on the palate with steely acidity and no shortage of green fruit. A finely spiced finish. Drink now." 93 pts, James Suckling
"Sourced from vines planted in the 1960s, the 2017 Julius Riesling features scents of lime blossoms and green apples. It's medium-bodied and seems soft and round upon first glance, with hints of peach leading a lovely integration of fruit and acidity. While already charming, it appears to have the backbone to support a decade or so of aging." 93 pts, Joe Czerwinski, WA
