Burgundy 2019 En Primeur | Vintage Report
We appreciate its been a while since our last Grand Cru evening and so we’d like to invite you to join us for a first look at Burgundy 2019 and to hear whether or not it could rival the vintage1865 as the greatest ever?!? November is the time of the Burgundy en-primeur pilgrimage and Tom and Clemence will be making the trip this year down to the hallowed hillsides around Beaune, despite the various Covid-related restrictions and precautions in place, to taste barrel samples and hear first-hand from the winemakers how the vintage is shaping up. Last year Tom’s good friend Bernard Hervet, former wine director of Domaine Faiveley and Maison Bouchard, and one of Burgundy’s foremost authorities, said of his initial impressions of the 2019 vintage: “It is very special. Despite the very dry summer there is no over-ripeness but instead wonderful balance, great precision and cooler fruit than expected. The top wines will age a very long time and be most pleasing to connoisseurs.” For red wines he suggests that of all vintages in the last twenty years the vintage bears comparison to 2010, but the drier summer suggests it could be even better. “The great vintages in Burgundy like 2005, 2009, 2015 all had hot, dry summers” he continues “perhaps 2019 will rival 1865, the greatest vintage of all, examples of which are still drinking well now”. Burgundy expert Jasper Morris MW from Christies shares Hervet’s enthusiasm, saying “the Burgundian mantra that vintages ending in ‘9’ are exceptional appears to be reconfirmed this year. 2019 in both colours will offer small volumes of highly concentrated wines with an abundance of healthy, ripe fruit, backed by excellent structure.” Please choose a nice bottle of Burgundy from the cellar and join us to hear Tom’s thoughts on the vintage and recommendations for the top wines from your favourite growers.
